Surviving Unemployment and Hard Times
During strikes, layoffs, lockouts or other disasters, the role of the CS is an important one. If a union anticipates a crisis situation, CS should begin preparation as soon as possible, building a Community Services Committee and assigning responsibilities. It might establish an emergency fund for hardships or to purchase food from the Food Bank.
In the event of a layoff or plant closure, many employers are required to give a 60-day advance notice to employees and the union. During this time CS can coordinate re-training and other re-employment services for affected members.
In all cases, members must be prepared for changes in their financial situation. It is crucial to contact creditors and make appropriate arrangements. Especially during hard times, stress can magnify personal and family problems. CS can prepare to respond to these needs and mobilize resources.
